DIY Surface Spray
Updated on March 16, 2015

When we keep a clean space, life just feels better. With spring approaching, many of us will be dedicating time to clear out stagnant spaces. Whether your goal is to minimize or just get rid of what isn’t serving you, you’ll probably need to dust off the cob webs and spray down your surfaces. We love having a natural surface spray handy when cleaning so we don’t have to worry about a laundry list of toxic ingredients. We also enjoy the dose of aromatherapy that cleaning with plant power can provide.

The best way to be sure your products are pure is to make them yourself. We suggest that you purchase pure, organic and undiluted essential oils. We like making surface sprays with essential oils such as lavender, lemon, tea tree and grapefruit peel.

There are many essential oils that can be used in this format, but it is important to think about what you want your surface spray to do. Also, what smells you are naturally attracted to? If you want a more relaxing blend, add a bit more lavender. If you want it to feel more uplifting, focus on lemon.

Once you’ve finished adding your essential oils, screw on the top, shake and start spraying. We suggest labeling your bottle with the ingredients used and storing both your spray bottle and essential oils in a cool dark place. It is important to keep essential oils and natural products away from direct light and heat so they retain their potency.

While it may seem like a good idea to use more drops of essential oil than the recipe calls for, we would suggest sticking to the recommended amount. Essential oils are highly concentrated and it is important to use them carefully. Please be aware of any allergies you might have and avoid getting the pure oils on your skin, as this can sometimes cause irritation.

You can use this spray on your desk, kitchen tables or bathrooms. This surface spray is truly multi-purpose; it will clean surfaces, smell great and stimulate your senses. To learn more about essential oils we suggest the book Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art, by Kathi Keville and Mindy Green.
